Aussie horse owners list preferred levy options

Australian horse owners have spoken on how they want to be charged a horse levy.In a process akin to outlining preferred options for having their teeth pulled, equestrians have listed their desired methods for being charged a levy in the event of a horse disease incursion in Australia.

The Australian government has given horse owners until December 1 to agree a framework under which the industry would become a signatory to the Emergency Animal Disease Response Agreement (EADRA).

This involves having an agreed structure in place to allow the government to charge horse owners a levy to recover the costs of fighting any disease incursion.

It says it will not be in a position to mount another response like that which eradicated equine influenza in 2007 unless the horse industry signs up.

Knowing a Horse's Laterality Could Affect Training

Knowing whether a horse favors his left or right leg can help owners and trainers develop better training programs for him, according to Amanda Warren-Smith, PhD, of the Millthorpe Equine Research Centre in New South Wales, Australia. An easy way to determine his laterality is with a pedometer designed for people.

Laterality is the preference an animal shows for one side of its body. For instance, most people are right-handed. Likewise, some horses tend to favor one leg over the other, said Warren-Smith.

"Knowing the 'handedness' of a horse can potentially help with balance and training, as well as awareness of musculoskeletal health," she said.

In a recent study, Warren-Smith and researchers put human pedometers into normal exercise boots on six horses and monitored the horses' activity in a paddock over five days. Most of the horses did not show a preference for one leg over the other, but two horses definitely preferred their left leg.

Zedonk Foal Turns Heads at Georgia Wildlife Preserve

What do you get when you cross a zebra and a donkey? One interesting story.

Although it might sound more like a joke than an actual event, one such zebra-donkey hybrid (known as a zedonk) was born last week at a wildlife preserve in Northern Georgia. Born to a donkey mother and a zebra father, the zedonk filly displays characteristics of both parents.
"Her conformation is marvelous," said C.W. Wathen, Chestatee Wildlife Preserve founder and general manager. "She's got a little dainty horse face. And of course she's got the donkey's tan color, and then she's got those striped legs. There's no way to describe her; she's just beautiful."

Defensive Horsemanship Keeps Owners Safe when Working with Horses

A person who practices defensive horsemanship is less likely to be hurt while handling a horse, Robert M. Miller, DVM, of Thousand Oaks, Calif., said at the recent American Veterinary Medical Association meeting July 31-Aug. 3 in Atlanta, Ga.

"[Because they are a prey animal,] horses are always afraid," he warned, and said people must act in a reassuring manner to avoid being kicked.

Many people stand right in front of or right behind a horse, working at arm's length to avoid being kicked, but Miller prefers to work up-close and personal from the side of the horse.

"I like to press myself against the horse’s body; I want the horse to feel me and focus on me. It is concerned and wondering what I am doing. If we work at arm’s distance, the horse continues to worry," he said.

Hey Werdun

Or anyone else who peeks in.

This evening I spotted a neighborhood horse tangled in wire.
It has taken 2 turns around the hind leg half way up the canon and pulled into a knot. The leg had swollen either side of the wire but not cut in.

I cut the wire off, massaged the leg and he walked of somewhat limpy, coming better as he got moving.
The leg & hoof were quite warm.
The owners arrived home from work, saying last they saw him was the evening before, so he might have been tangled for quite some time.

Any ideas of a prognosis for this scenario?
I'm presuming at the very least, the site might be so bruised from the tight wire that the area might slough away...but no idea of the possible damage from the circulation being cut off for possibly and extended time, etc.

1) Border collie x German Koolie, Cobber is male, black with white and tan markings.

2) Border Collie X German Koolie, Maccas is a male, chocolate merle with white and tan markings.

1 & 2 are full brothers, bred from genuine working dogs on a property out west and would probably work with training. They have basic lead training, can be chained up or caged. They are good with kids and horses but show a little too much interest in cats and poultry (no kill or they would not be offered to anyone). They are approx 6 months old.

3) Red heeler x staffy, Bella is female, stumpy tail, approx 4 months old. She is red heeler colour but built more like a staffy.

4) 3/4 Blueheeler/blue cattle dog 1/4 Kelpie, blue in colour, male approx 4 months old.

3 & 4 Have very basic lead training, can be chained and caged. Good with kids and horses but show a little too much interest in cats and poultry (no kill or they would not be offered to anyone). Their owners are studying/working and expecting a new baby so will not have the time for them in the future. They would like to find a home/s that can give them the attention they deserve.

We are also having to find a new rental and feel it would be much easier for us and much kinder for them to find new homes while they are still puppies.

We are located at Postmans Ridge Qld. Please email dusteepinto@bigpond.com (not the above email) or 0427 694 191.

New Doggie

Well after a couple of years, daughter Moni finally decided to get a new dog after losing her childhood Cavvie.

She came across this fellow and was hit by instant besotment.

3rd dog down, the Cavalier King Charles
http://www.aaps.org.au/dogs/dogs_page_three-b.html

3mths in the center, Sully has one eye and a heart murmur and no one wanted him.
What a treasure! He's obviously been well loved at some stage. Knows that beds are for sleeping on, found the pet door immediately, eats only the best people food.
It was such fun to watch him explored his new yard and hang laps around the house after months of mostly confinement.

So far Sully has only shown up one fault - the Cavvie trait on recall.
You call him, he looks at you for 3 secs..*taken a message, get back to you later*...and dashes off in the other direction.

Catching up...

Well, Titan needs no introduction and Ricky was a nicely growing little foal when I "fell off" the forum. Ricky has grown into such a handsome little man (he's in the for sale section). We took the boys to the Breeders Crown at Wayville Showgrounds in April for a fun day out, and got some nice piccies.

Ricky (shown by my OH) had some very well attended classes to contest and as a 2yo against adults, it was always going to be tough for him. But they did get 2nd in the handler class which was pretty cool...Ricky did such a good job and made everything really easy for the OH. Unlike Titan who was being a complete sod (and very fresh) and was not doing me ANY favours at all, going so far as to try and give me a nip when I stood him up. I thought stuff it, I don't care if we're in the middle of our workout, and wolloped him one across the nose, and he was okay for the rest of the class. Didn't expect to get anywhere because he was just bloody awful to be honest, so it was a surprise when we actually got third behind OH in what was a very big class.

Ricky

Under saddle, I still can't believe how well we did. Titan had been spelling since the last hunt in August, and just when I was going to bring him back into work to prepare for this show, he came down with the Man Cold From Hell. Just when he got to a point where he could start working, I caught one too (yes, a man cold). So in the end, we only had one week under saddle before going into the biggest show in the state! It's hard to not go into the atrocious management of the show, but I went out to the ridden classes after the led only to find they were taking a break while pony trots were on. With no loudspeaker, no idea how many were in the classes (as the programmes weren't available) and our classes on the other side of the arena, it was hard to judge when to saddle up to go out. I did so when the pony trots came out. We arrived at the ring only to be told we had just missed our ridden stallion class, and pleasure stallion was on NOW. Um....okay. So that's not exactly ideal to take a fresh stallion straight into a pleasure class! Anyway, he was a bit forward and the brakes weren't perfect, but he did pretty good. Only one in the class so first there and into Champion. All going good on the circle until we had someone in front of us at the canter, then we got stronger and stronger and stronger... LOL! So I was able to ride one handed for *most* of the time...and we ended up with Reserve Champion Pleasure Horse which I was really chuffed with. Long story short, we also got Reserve Champion rider and Reserve Best Educated (stuffed up the flying changes). And all this with only 5 rides beforehand!!!

Tess is the one eyed TB weanling I mentioned in my intro. Due to the circumstances, I had to take her at 4mo which was not ideal and I kept her on milk powder for another month. She had rattles as a baby too, so she just hadn't had the best start and about a month ago, to top it off, she got a really bad strep infection and was a very sick little girl for a while. After antibiotics, ulcer treatment, probiotics and all kinds of other goodies, we're just about on track to get strong and healthy. She is such a little character and has the one-eyed head tilt happening...cracks me seeing her like that. I'm sure she emphasises it just to look cute! (My last one eyed horse never took the tilt to that extreme!)

Since I have piccies, this is OH's mare who broke her spine. Self explanatory really!

Finally, there is Wedgie. Haven't got photos yet, but should have a heap tomorrow as I believe my camera will find its way home and we are picking up a harness and buggy for the little tyke. He is a registered and licensed shettie stallion, chestnut with flaxen mane and tail...and a real DUDE!!!

Sire: Halado Werdun (Han x TB)
Dam: Imor (TB)

2yo bay gelding, mature 16.2h. AWHA registered, fully handled, shown in hand. Absolute pleasure to do anything with. A real character. Has one full sister schooling 1.30m with ease, and another in Sydney who is doing everything from dressage to PC. All three of these siblings have exceptional temperaments with very sensible and calm outlooks.

Ricky is ideally suited to an ambitious and competitive rider who also enjoys the occasional pleasure ride. Would be perfect for someone wanting to start their first young horse from scratch. Sound and blemish free, he would be competitive in any discipline, and will prove to be as versatile as his sire.

Sale by breeder...who decided not to advertise him for ages because she was harbouring a secret desire to keep him because he's such a character! Can't keep them all though...so looking for a home worthy of such a lovely horse.

Another finds their way back

It's good to be back! I am another one who had problems with one of the format changes and couldn't log on/post.

Guess I should reintroduce myself...

I'm in SA and breed WB x TBs. I stand the WB stallion Halado Werdun who is an incredible horse and I love him to bits. Lately, we just cruise around and dabble in hunting to hounds. In addition to him, I have:
Magic - TB broodmare in foal to Werdun
Tess - TB weanling (future broodmare). Born with one micropthalmic eye and therefore an inviable thoroughbred, she is also a grand daughter of Redoute's Choice and the daughter of my favourite mare at work (TB stud). As she is a rather well bred mare, I had no chance in hell of getting my hands on HER, but being in the right place at the right time means that I am the proud owner of her daughter, the most ridiculously well bred TB I am ever likely to own! Of course, she too has her fair share of character!
Ricky - A 2yo gelding by Werdun who is an absolute darling of a horse. He is for sale.
OH's TB mare - currently empty, and recovering from a broken back which has left her with a paralysed tail (amazing story really). She has the go ahead to keep breeding though and if she doesn't go back in foal to a TB stallion, will have a date with Werdun.
Have a few odds and sods agisting here as well, but...
Last but not least (well, actually he is least) is our latest aquisition.

Don't laugh.

Akeringa Desmond. AKA Reggie. AKA Wedgie.

Yep, Halado Park is also now standing a Shitland stallion! What a spur of the moment decision that was! But it's all good...he's a gorgeous little man, registered, licensed and broken to harness. We are picking up a cart and harness for him tomorrow and hope to be out and about in the ring this summer. He is more the OH's horse as he always wanted his own stallion (he is a stallion man professionally) and admittedly, this was a bit of a joke, but Wedgie is absolutely perfect and will undoubtedly become a bit of a family member!

Anyway, I've just started holidays so it's a good time to catch up with what's been going on!
